LYIT show promise after first win of season

first_imgIT Tallaght was the venue for this game in the Colleges and Universities Football League. LYIT were coming off the back of a defeat at home to Sligo IT and were committed to coming home from Tallaght with , at least, a share of the spoils. Daire McDaid reverted to his usual midfield role flanked by Brian McVeigh of Letterkenny Rovers and Marty Doherty the Cockhill Celtic player. The role of these three defined the game both in pace and passing.Paul McVeigh and Simon McGlynn played up front, both of whom had experienced a heavy weekend with their respective teams, McVeigh representing Ulster in the interprovincial competition and Simon McGlynn making a telling contribution to the Finn Harps U19 semi-final game against UCD in Finn Park. The early running was made by the front two with Ryan Connolly and Adrian Delap providing support from the right side. McVeigh went close on several occasions and was at the receiving end of a lot of heavy tackles from Devine of Tallaght, a player now on the Shamrock Rovers books, and well acquainted with the CUFL league, this being his third season in Tallaght colours .The only goal of the game came from a LYIT attack started in midfield by Marty Doherty with Paul McVeigh pressing on goal, Ryan Connolly seized the chance to roll the ball over the line to leave the margin at 1-0,The second half commenced with two changes to the Tallaght side, Tallaght manager Pat Scully replacing both full backs a move that he hoped might calm the pace set by Connolly and McGlynn in particular. The one outstanding chance that came the way of Tallaght brought out the best in Letterkenny IT keeper Mark McElhinney who pushed the ball over the bar from close range. The result leaves the table very much on a level with match day 3 to come and another away game for LYIT in Blanchardstown.
