Woman duped into paying 180 for a wooden iPad

first_imgPeople who are desperate to buy an iPad or iPhone but cannot afford one are willing to do some pretty crazy things. In China one teenage boy sold a kidney to get the money for an iPad, while a girl offered her virginity for an iPhone 4. Both of these were pretty stupid acts just to get hold of a piece of technology.Desperation can also lead some to believe that a too-good-to-be-true bargain is in fact the deal of the century, and as one 22-year-old South Carolina woman discovered, it rarely is.Being approached by two “salesmen” in a McDonald’s parking lot is almost certainly not going to end with everyone walking away happy. The woman, named Ashley McDowell, was offered a brand new iPad (or laptop) contained in a FedEx box by two black males. The asking price for the iPad was $300, but she only had $180. In an Apple Store that would be met with apologies and no sale, but these guys decided to do the woman a deal and accepted her $180. Lucky her.As you can imagine, the FedEx box was not going to contain an iPad, but the sellers had at least made some effort. When the woman opened the box she discovered a piece of wood with black tape around the edges of the supposed touchscreen display. On the back was a large Apple logo. For the scammers the important thing is to get the weight of the box feeling right if this is going to work. So why did they take the time to make this look like a tablet? Did they really think if someone asked to look at it they’d be able to convince their customer this plank of wood was the real deal? The police are now trying to track down the two men. The only information they have to go on is the fact they were driving a white impala and one of the men had a gold tooth. The boot was apparently filled with other FedEx boxes suggesting someone had taken the time to create quite a few of these iPlanks.via the smoking gunlast_img read more
