Ranji Trophy: Gautam Gambhir named skipper, Ajay Jadeja may be mentor

first_imgDespite the politics and infighting refusing to die down at the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), the sports committee on Saturday announced that Gautam Gambhir will lead the team in this year’s Ranji Trophy. With Gambhir’s appointment confirmed, the spotlight is now on Ajay Jadeja’s role with the team. While 22 directors have nominated him coach, Vijay Dahiya is still the sports committee’s favourite choice to become the chief coach.Speaking to Mail Today, a sports committee member said that it still backed Dahiya to become coach and Jadeja could in all probability become the state coach or the mentor.”As you already know, Gambhir has been named captain for the upcoming season. Now, it is time to look at the coach’s position where Gambhir isn’t too keen on working with Jadeja. While Gambhir hasn’t really said anything to us, the lack of camaraderie is clearly evident. Also, we would like to have Dahiya as the coach as he has done well with the team last season and the players like having him around.”But, you have to realise that 22 directors approved Jadeja’s appointment. While it is our job to make the appointments, we can’t really ignore their views. Also, it is being said that Jadeja’s name was personally mentioned by former DDCA chief Arun Jaitley. So, we would also take that into account before making a decision. We are meeting tomorrow and a final call will be taken unanimously. We could see Dahiya being appointed chief coach and Jadeja the state coach or the mentor. But you have to wait till tomorrow,” he said.advertisementWhen asked about Jadeja’s role if he is appointed the state coach or a mentor, the official said: “Firstly, Jadeja has to accept the offer and things can move forward only from there. If he agrees, he will oversee proceedings in all age-groups and he will also be available to help the senior team whenever he is needed. It is actually the best possible solution.”last_img read more
