Journalist Henry Bestman pleads for humanitarian assistance to save his handJournalist Henry Bestman, known popularly as “Scarface or Scarlie” who formerly worked as a desk editor at HOT PEPPER Newspaper, has called on the general public to assist him with financial assistance in the amount of USD1, 300 to seek medical attention in Ghana.In a press release issued in Monrovia, Bestman directed his appeal to Chief Justice Francis Korkpor, Justice Minister and Attorney General Musa Dean, Assistant Minister Lafayette Gould, Mr. Charles L. Ananaba, CEO of Omega Insurance, Mr. Leonard Kransass, and other humanitarian and philanthropic organizations for help.According to the release, Mr. Bestman, a member of the Press Union of Liberia and Association of Judicial Reporters, “has been suffering from a terrible wound below his left-hand elbow since 2004 when he caught ‘Fire Gowa.’”Gowa comes in many forms, with “the fire type” being the most painful, according to interviews with Liberians who hail from the Southeast. It is thrown on people as revenge or sometimes as a punishment for those who offend another or someone who follows another person’s spouse. It is reported to be the cause of many deaths in the country, particularly in slum communities and also in Southeast counties (Sinoe, Grand Gedeh, Maryland, River Gee and Grand Kru).The release said the “Fire Gowa,” which initially creates pains like there was a fire in the wound, was treated but has remained in Bestman’s wound. He is also reported to suffer from diabetes.In his appeal, Bestman was quoted by the release as pleading to the general public to hurry and send any help that any contributor can afford to Mr. Philip Wesseh, Managing Director, The Inquirer Newspaper; he can be reached on 0886-516-533 and Mr. Charles Cuffey, president of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL).In a release signed by Mr. Cuffey, Bestman expressed gratitude to all those that have been giving him support. He mentioned Associate Justice Kabineh Ja’neh, Solicitor General Darku Mulbah, Mr. Phillip N. Wesseh and Magistrate Cecil Griffiths.Mr. Bestman is a father of three (two girls and a boy of about 14 to 18 years of age). His condition has made it impossible for him to care for them. He has also suffered bouts of frustration as a result, which has compounded his tragedy for nearly 14 years. He has had the misfortune to become physically assaulted by many people. The children’s mother surprisingly died several months ago from what family members say was “Gowa,” that affected her foot when she worked as an immigration officer in Maryland County.She died at the JFK Medical Center and was buried by her family. However, Bestman, who is a Roman Catholic, has promised to build a vault on her grave in Buchana. Two walkabouts will take place on 20 and 21 July at 15h00.Supporting the Mandela Children’s HospitalThe initiative was open to all and entrants had to agree to donate their poster without charge to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust and allow the trust to exhibit and reproduce copies as part of its fundraising programme.The trust will respect the intellectual rights of all contributors and will not sell copies of the artwork.The winning 95 posters will be printed in a single special edition and launched online on the eve of Mandela’s birthday, before being auctioned off by the trust.Another set of posters will form part of a travelling exhibition. Invitations for the exhibition to visit have already been received from Brazil, Mexico, the US, and China.The project has also been endorsed by Icograda (International Council for Communications Design), as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations.
3 October 2013European aircraft manufacturer Airbus delivered the first of a batch of 50 A400M military transport planes – complete with critical components manufactured in South Africa, by South Africans – to the French Air Force on Monday.Engineers, artisans and technicians at South African company Denel Aerostructures took time off work to watch the handover celebrations – attended by Crown Prince Felipe of Spain and French Defence Minister Jean Yves le Drian – via live video linkup with Airbus Military’s facility in Seville, Spain.The giant airlifter, the first of 50 ordered by France and one of a total of 174 on order, will be based at France’s Orleans Bricy Air Base, where it will be initially used for training before being deployed on military and humanitarian missions.South Africa is one of seven countries working on the A400M programme. Denel Aerostructures, the only tier 1 supplier of manufactured parts to the A400M outside of Europe, is responsible for the design, engineering and fabrication of the aircraft’s wing-to-fuselage fairing and fuselage top-shells.South African company Aerosud manufactures the A400M’s cockpit lining, cabin lining and the wing-tip, while Cape Town-based Cobham South Africa supplies the aircraft’s satellite communications antennae and underlying systems.According to Denel, the A400M’s wing-to-fuselage fairing, which functions as a protective, aerodynamic shroud over sensitive equipment located in the centre wing part of the A400M, is the largest single aerostructure component yet produced in South Africa.At the Paris Airshow in France in June, Airbus Military placed a third multi-million rand contract with Denel, for the manufacturing of the “ribs, spars and swords” making up the inside structure of the A400M’s distinctive tail section.Denel chairman Zoli Kunene said the R200-million (€15.1-million) work package, contracted to run over the entire life of the A400M programme, “demonstrates Airbus Military’s confidence in Denel and South Africa’s design and manufacturing capabilities, coupled with our ability to deliver on time and within budgets”.Denel describes the A400M as “the most cost-efficient and versatile airlifter ever conceived and absolutely unique in its capabilities”.With a cargo hold designed to carry the outsize equipment needed for both military and humanitarian disaster relief missions, a range of over 3 300 kilometres, and the ability to land on unprepared terrain, the airlifter has been “designed to meet the needs of the world’s armed forces in the 21st century”, the company says.It is also “ideally suited to the typical African peace-support missions which continue to be undertaken by South Africa in support of African Union and United Nations mandates on the continent”.SAinfo reporter and SAnews.gov.za
Wales is pursuing an aggressive low-carbon policy for residential and commercial construction, with strict requirements for energy efficiency, water consumption, and use of sustainable materials set to take effect September 1.The United Kingdom as a whole has in fact embraced residential energy efficiency and sustainability standards that are in line with the European Parliament’s vote in mid-April requiring that new buildings constructed after 2018 produce their own energy. England and Wales use what is called the Code for Sustainable Homes, a planning-system code structure that ranges from Level 1, which is the lowest rating, to Level 6, the highest. The Welsh Assembly Government’s policy will require new housing to meet, at the minimum, Level 3 standards for projects approved on or after September 1.Aiming highOne of the projects intended to kick-start Wales’ green economy, according to a story recently published by the UK-based Green Building Press, is a three-home mini development in a former steelworks in Ebbw Vale, South Wales. The project touts not only high sustainability and energy-efficiency standards, but a high degree of collaboration among its partners, which include BRE Wales, a building and research consultancy; the Welsh Assembly Government; Blaenau Gwent Council, the county governing body; and United Welsh Housing Association.The project’s first house is designed to set a high standard not only for the development but for homebuilding elsewhere in the country. It is a three-bedroom built to the Passivhaus performance standard and a Level 6 rating under the Code for Sustainable Homes. The home will feature a closed-panel timber frame system made from Welsh timber, a solar power system, and Welsh larch cladding.A second three-bedroom house, designed to meet Level 5 code requirements, will be developed by Dragonboard, which will use its own brand of panels and sheathing rather than oriented-strand board and plasterboard.The third house, a two-bedroom, also will be built to the Passivhaus (and Level 6) standard but will be clad in Welsh lime render and feature specially developed windows made in Wales with local timber.A showcase for domestically produced materialsConstruction costs for the three homes – which will serve as prototypes for future projects – range from $173 per sq. ft. to $232 per sq. ft. They’re expected to be ready for occupancy by the summer of next year and will then be monitored for performance, factoring in occupant behavior, energy costs (which are expected to be under $80 annually), energy usage by mechanical systems, air quality, heat loss, and renewable-energy sources.“We wanted to develop a range of Welsh-made construction materials and products that could meet the high sustainability criteria now essential in developing a low-carbon built environment,” BRE Wales Director Nick Tune told Green Building Press. “Most of the homes meeting high levels of sustainability in the UK use a primarily international supply chain. We have shown what can be achieved through collaboration, partnership and a positive, can-do attitude.”
A new New Deal houseThe “New Norris House” was designed to mark the 75th anniversary of a model community originally built in 1933 by the Tennessee Valley Authority as part of the Norris Dam construction project. The house is a team project of the University of Tennessee College of Architecture & Design.It’s small (just 1,008 sq. ft.) and relatively inexpensive ($180,000), and it sits on a tiny lot (one-third of an acre).According to its designers, the modeled energy use for the house is 7,123 kWh of electricity per year, less than half of the average energy use of homes in the region. It uses no fossil fuels and has a HERS rating of 49.The house is heated and cooled with a three-head ductless minisplit heat pump. Mechanicals also include an energy-recovery ventilator and a solar hot-water system that preheats water for a tankless electric water heater.The house was built off-site in two sections. The designers said that advanced framing techniques reduced lumber consumption by more than 17%, and that off-site prefabrication reduced construction waste by 70%.Other features of the New Norris House include:A ventilated rainscreen.Wall insulation that includes R-21 batts and 1 in. of rigid polyisocyanurate.Salvaged white oak flooring.Low- and no-VOC glues, paints, and finishes.A flexible first-floor design that can be configured as open space, a one-bedroom space, or a two-bedroom space.Universal design that includes a ramped entry.Versatile pieces of furniture that can be deployed in more than one way.There were 500 Norris houses built between 1932 and 1934, most of which are still standing, according to designers of the New Norris House. “The scale, character and durability of the houses and town’s walkability (especially for seniors and schoolchildren) provide enduring lessons. The New Norris House leverages and enhances these characteristics.” In California, a home for a familyThe other residential project that was honored this year is entirely different. It’s nearly four times the size, at 3,800-sq. ft., and cost almost ten times as much to build ($1.7 million). And it’s in the affluent California beachfront community of Venice.Brooks + Scarpa submitted the design, which is called Yin Yang House. “Part private home and part business, the house is meant to serve as a place to entertain and a welcoming space for clients and teenagers,” the designers said. The owners remain anonymous.The project was described as a “nearly net-zero” project with a very tight building envelope and a 12-kW photovoltaic array.Designers said the house is organized around a series of courtyards. The building is one room deep to make the most of natural light and ventilation. The living room, designed for entertaining, includes — wait for it — a 50-ft. long sliding glass door.The designers said that a variety of features contribute to the home’s low energy consumption. The house exceeds the requirements of California’s Title 24 energy code by 42%, while its energy use intensity (EUI) was 94% lower than that of a typical single-family home. The house has a HERS rating of 62.Other building features include:Interior materials selected for high recycled content and low chemical emissions.FSC-certified wood for cabinets and flooring.Blown-in cellulose insulation.Low-flow water fixtures and dual-flush toilets, plus a system to capture and filter rainwater before it’s returned to the ground.Incorporation of an existing 1,200-sq.-ft. “tear down” in the renovated and enlarged structure, more than tripling the size of the original house with a net increase in lot coverage of less than 800 sq. ft.Drought-tolerant plantings and permeable ground coverings, along with a green roof and an artificial lawn that requires no water. This year’s top 10 sustainable designs selected by the American Institute of Architects include two houses and several commercial and institutional buildings: a student apartment complex, a school expansion, and 67,000-sq. ft. inner-city warehouse redevelopment project.The AIA’s Committee on the Environment (COTE) recognized this year’s winners at the organization’s annual convention, which was held from June 20 to 22 in Denver. (The winners were originally announced on Earth Day in April.)The AIA declared that the competition “recognizes projects that successfully integrate exemplary aesthetics, advanced performance, community connection, social responsibility and stewardship of the natural environment.”Most of the projects are large public buildings. The Federal Center South Building 1202, for example, is a $65 million, 209,000-sq. ft. regional headquarters for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Seattle. But the list also includes two residential projects: a private home in Venice, California, and a new version of a house originally designed as part of a model community in Norris, Tennessee in the 1930s.
Cornell University alumnus Bill Maher has sent a letter to his alma mater opposing the deer hunt that the school is allowing in Sapsucker Woods, its 226-acre wildlife “sanctuary.”“What dictionary does Cornell use? I ask because when I was an undergrad there, “sanctuary” meant “a place of refuge or safety.” Apparently, someone’s using another definition, one that says giving bowhunters carte blanche to snuff out deer in Sapsucker Woods Sanctuary is OK,” wrote Maher. “It’s not. These gentle animals don’t ask for much — they just want to be left in peace to raise their families. Do you know that fawns stay by their mothers’ sides for up to two years? I’m not surprised that bowhunters don’t care if they destroy these families — however, that Cornell doesn’t care is hard to swallow. So is this: I’ve learned from my friends at PETA that for every deer killed by a bowhunter, at least one other is shot but escapes. It can be weeks before some die. Weeks, Dr. Pollack.“Please don’t tell me that killing deer is necessary in order to control their numbers. For how many years have bowhunters been given a free pass? I didn’t study wildlife management during my time at Cornell, but I don’t need a degree in it to know that if this misguided program actually worked, deer wouldn’t be in Sapsucker Woods again.“Here’s another thing I’ve learned: Installing fencing, using repellants like pepper spray, and administering contraceptive vaccines keep deer populations in check humanely. In my book, that’s effective management.”
