Newcastle United arrive in slightly better shape following their stunning 6-2 win over Norwich last Sunday, the highest-scoring game in the Barclays Premier League so far.Sunderland are still bottom, while Newcastle are in 18th place. The home side go into the game still without a win; it is only the third time in their top-flight history that they have failed to win in their opening nine games. If they fail again, it will be their worst start since the 1976-77 season, when they went 10 without a win.Newcastle will be boosted by scoring six goals in a Premier League game for the first time since August 2010 against Aston Villa.Newcastle’s star man against Norwich was Georginio Wijnaldum, who became only the second man to score four in a Premier League game for Newcastle and first since Alan Shearer (against Sheffield Wednesday, September 1999).
SAN BERNARDINO – A small plane headed to Henderson, Nev., crashed on a freeway at the crest of the Cajon Pass in San Bernardino County early Friday, killing an Air Force officer and slowing the rush-hour commute. The pilot of the single-engine Piper PA-28 was talking to air traffic controllers in San Diego at 12:42 a.m. when they lost communication and the plane vanished from the radar, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said. The pilot, who was the only person on board, apparently did not issue a mayday, Gregor said. The pilot was identified by the county Coroner’s Office as Air Force Lt. Col. Raymond Roessler, 43, of Clinton, Utah. The plane took off from Long Beach and was headed to Henderson, Gregor said. Shortly after 6 a.m., plane wreckage was reported on Interstate 15, said county Fire Department Supervisor Karen Humphreys. The plane crashed on the expansive, hilly median between the north and southbound lanes. Interstate 15, the main road between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, was not closed but traffic was slowed for hours and backed up for several miles. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
