Exclusive – Van Gaal may decide he doesn’t need Rooney now, warns Man United legend

first_imgPaul McGrath believes Wayne Rooney has put his status as a guaranteed Manchester United starter in jeopardy by being sent off against West Ham.Louis van Gaal indicated earlier this season that he views his captain as the only untouchable outfield player in his star-studded squad. But McGrath believes the Dutchman may revise his opinion should United impress while the striker serves a three-match ban for his wild kick at Stewart Downing during the narrow victory over the Hammers at the weekend.“They have got so much talent up front that Wayne is probably not going to be missed as much as people think he is,” said the Red Devils legend, speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.“Van Gaal is going to have to change the whole front system around and it might work better. You never know.“I would have Wayne Rooney in there every time but he has given himself a problem by getting out [of the team] so simply. He has given Van Gaal a problem because he can say, ‘do we really need Wayne sprinting round the pitch, kicking people and maybe being petulant?’ And we are going to find out whether he does.”United’s victory over West Ham will have come as a huge relief to Van Gaal, who has endured a tough start to his Old Trafford reign. But McGrath still feels United are a work in progress and expects his old club to miss out on Champions League football for another season.“I hate to say this as an ex-Man United player and supporter but I think it is a case of sorting this lot out and being patient and waiting for the rise of Manchester United, probably later on in this season. I don’t think a top four finish will be on the cards,” he said.last_img
